Listed below are some common title terms and meanings. These terms will differ from state to state but will usually be similar in meanings.

The laws pertaining to the usage of  titled vehicles will also vary, if you have any questions about your particular state laws, you should consult with your local Department of Public Safety Office.

Please keep in mind that titles listed as branded, salvaged, junked or other related terms will have any remaining factory warranties voided by the manufacturer.

Clear
A Clear title is assigned to a vehicle with no previous Salvage notations, legends or sub-brands

Salvage Or Branded
A Salvage title is assigned to a vehicle that has been declared a total loss resulting from Fire, Vandalism, Collision, Theft, Flood or other occurrence. The rules pertaining to a salvage title may prohibit the use of a vehicle listed as salvaged. As stated above, consult your states Dept of Public Safety.

Reconstructed
A Reconstructed title is assigned to a vehicle previously titled as Salvage-Repairable and has been repaired and inspected. This title requires a sub-brand of Prior Fire, Vandalism, Collision, Theft or Flood.

Recovered Theft
A Recovered Theft title is assigned to a vehicle previously titled as Salvage-Repairable with minimal damage. This title requires a sub-brand of Prior Fire, Vandalism, Collision, Theft or Flood.

Dismantled Title
The vehicle sustained major damage to one or more major component parts and the cost of repairing the vehicle for safe operation exceeds its fair market value. When a Dismantled title is issued, the vehicle may be used only for parts or scrap metal. It cannot be re-titled or returned to the road.

Flood Damage Title
States issue flood titles when a vehicle has been in a flood or has received extensive water damage.

Hail Damage Title
The vehicle sustained major damage due to hail. In most states, hail damage titles are issued when the cost of repairing the vehicle for safe operation exceeds its fair market value

Junk Title
A Junk Title is issued on a vehicle damaged to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle for safe operation exceeds its fair market value; or a vehicle that has been declared a Total Loss by an insurer or other state or jurisdiction.

Some states treat Junk titles the same as Salvage but the majority use this title to indicate that a vehicle is not road worthy and cannot be titled again in that state.

Rebuilt/Reconstructed Title
A Rebuilt/Reconstructed vehicle is a salvage vehicle that has been repaired and restored to operation.

These vehicles are often severely damaged before they are rebuilt and refurbished parts are typically used during reconstruction.

In most states, an inspection of the vehicle is required before the vehicle is allowed to return to the road.
